Do you need a degree to become a graphic designer?

Explore your options before making your choice

There are many aspiring designers who are confused about the best way to get into the field.  For most, it's a matter of learning the craft of designing using various software programs and for others, it's a matter of creating a portfolio to show off your work to future clients and employers.

One age old question is do you need a degree to get a job as a designer?  Well, it depends on answering a few questions:

  1. Do you like structure?
  2. Do you mind sharing your ideas and working as part of a team to create a brand?
  3. Do you like to work alone?
  4. Does the through of being restricted on a project turn you off?
  5. Does the thought of becoming your own boss excite you?

If you can answer "yes" to more than 3 of the questions above, you have the makings of a sole proprietor.  Self employed designers create their own hours, call their own shots, and claim 100% of the work invested into a project.  The down-side is that you need to be talented, organized, good at marketing yourself, develop a client base (that in turn will get you referrals) and have adequate hardware/software to do the job.

Being self taught, innovative, and up to date on the latest programs (including the Adobe Suite) is sufficient enough for you to be on your own boss.  In this instance, we recommend getting a certificate that verifies your expertise as a graphic designer.

If the thought of you going to a 9-5, working as part of a team, taking direction from the lead designer or project manager, getting benefits, and having job security appeals to you, we recommend either a 2 or a 4 Year degree.  Most employers require these bare minimum, while promotions within a company require a Master's Degree.

By spending under $5000 to get a certificate, you cut out the fluff (electives, etc.) and get to the substance (learning how to become a designer).  At the same time, you can work for yourself while having the potential for uncapped income.

Option B is finding a school that specializes in graphic design or has a very strong graphic design program, getting a student loan (or receiving a scholarship/PT job/contribution from your parents), earning your degree in about 4 or 5 years, and battling it out with other recent and experienced grads searching for the same opportunities.

We've worked with several very talented designers who don't have degrees, and know from experience that even designers with degrees may not have a design style that suits most companies. With that being said, choose the best path for you.
